You can find the accompanying article to Oko, here.
As we're a Limited focused blog, despite most of the recent content here, we're evaluating this card through a Limited lens. The first ability is largely meaningless, as we have no idea what a Food token is and no real hints, either. I assume similarities to Clues and Treasure/Gold can be ruled out, as both of those token types have been relatively well supported and popular; I doubt we're getting those reskinned. The only hint we have right now is the following card, Flaxen Intruder.
I found the above image, here. Click the image to enlarge.
Flaxen Intruder is quite the powerful card, as it offers the ability to destroy an artifact or enchantment for 1 mana. The real exciting part for us is that ability in the bottom right corner, Welcome Home an "Adventure". Somehow, someway that's going to be a castable spell, and having that flexibility on a card like this is incredibly powerful for us Limited folk. In general you always want cards that remain relevant at all points of the game, and 7 mana to make 6 power and toughness over 3 bodies is exactly that when stapled to our 1 mana creature. It could be a reach, but Wizards contains numerous smart cookies (and Gingerbread men as it turns out), so I doubt they spoiled these two cards on the same day by accident.
My best guess is that Food tokens allow you to cast Adventure cards; I also assume they're going to be artifacts or even enchantments based off this card alone. Ready for more reaching? I think this will be an activated ability either through your hand or through the Graveyard, similar to Aftermath from Amonkhet Block. With a Food token available, you'll be able to cast the spell, likely consuming the food in the process. As this card is an uncommon, and it has a relatively powerful front half, I expect subsequent "Adventure" cards to be more powerful.
Back to Oko from earlier! Assuming Food has some power, this is a strong card and looks to be very powerful in Limited. The ability to make your own creatures bigger and turn your opponents creatures into "only" 3/3s isn't that exciting, but the fact that it's connected to a +1 ability makes it a lot more appealing. On the play especially, you'll have access to a curve of any 2 drop into Oko, making your 2 drop into a 3/3 to protect Oko going forward. I'm not sure how relevant the ultimate ability is, as Switcheroo for a small creature isn't the most exciting, but if there's any reasonable Unsummon variant in the set it'll be trivial to build up to this ability early in the game, bounce your owned creature back to your own hand putting you miles ahead.
Evaluating the card based off of what we know, and assuming the Food ability does nothing, this card is quite strong although is likely to fall off substantially the later in the game we cast it. On curve, especially on the play, expect Oko to feel nearly unbeatable. At other periods, the card gives a large array of mediocre options just based off what you decided to target with the 3/3 making ability, and will likely reward creative players the most.
Until next time,
Kevin
